There is some discussion as to whether some of the footage (and therefore the pictures below) is of Muchea or another Mercury site. Some who worked at Muchea think the scrub surrounding the station should be much more noticeable than it is in these pictures. The main pictures in question are the pan from the Verlort Radar, and the picture with the Powerhouse. I believe they are of Muchea (based on comparisons with station plans and contemporary satellite imagery as well, the topography, the white sand [White Sands, New Mexico didnt have Verlort], the placement of the access road and the tank on the access road), but I have never actually been to the site. :-) Any thoughts would be most welcome. (Clearly, the first photo below, with the sign and the entrance gate, is Muchea. Jack Duperouzel remembers that the flag was raised on the flagpole each morning by an Australian Federal Policeman who lived in a caravan onsite to provide security. The caravan is visible in this photo.) |
